Unity is the Pillar to Success

Well, I was among the chosen ones to write an essay regarding the topic "Unity is the Pillar to Success". Honestly, I didn't even bother about taking part in it. I was "FORCED" to join this essay writting competition which I didn't like. So it was as usual a last minute entry. I just found out later in the day that this random brainstorming essay got me 2nd place. Mun Hong's essay got first.

In fact, i didn't prepare a thing for this essay but oh well. This is the essay!

Unity is the pillar to success.

"United we stand, Divided we fall" is a phrase that has been used in mottos, from nations and states to songs. The basic concept is that unless the people are united and one people, it is easy to destroy them. In commemorating the 51st Independence of Malaysia, unity is the pillar to success or specifically “Perpaduan Teras Kejayaan” has been assign as the motto and the title to the theme song of the 51st Independence of Malaysia which was originally composed by Pak Ngah and Lokman Ghani.

Unity or Integration among races is a vital part of maintaining the peace and harmony of this Asian country. The motto of this beautiful country is ‘unity is strength’. From the motto, we know that Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multilingual society. The population of the country is 28.9 million consisting of 62% Malays, 24% Chinese, 8% Indians, with other minorities and indigenous peoples. Malaysia is among the developing countries and the integration of races is considered the most vital part of its uniqueness. Most Malaysian gets their citizenship through “lex soli” system and after being granted the citizenship nevertheless their religion, they are automatically considered as a Malaysian.

Malaysians has been very supportive towards each other throughout the years. A number of Malaysians have been involved in various uphill tasks to bring the good name to the country. Here are a few of the examples we can emphasis on. Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, who was one of the eight elite astronauts traveled into space accompanied by the Russians. A large amount of crowd turned up at the Merdeka Stadium to watch a representative of the country go into space. This shows how much support we have as Malaysian to come and show our appreciation and to show congratulation towards a representative of the country.

Another historic happened a decade ago. An event when M. Magendran and N. Mohandass became the first Malaysians who climbed to the summit of Mount Everest, reaching the peak on 23 May 1997. This brought a shock to the whole nation, as they proved to the doubters that even the impossible could be achieved with faith and determination. This achievement has brought the nation to a whole other level, proving that even the small country from the southern-east is capable to hike a gigantic mountain. It also increases the self-esteem and tightens the bond with of each Malaysian as well as crediting the Indian-Malaysians whom risk their lives to put the Jalur Gemilang on the top of the peak.

One memorable event that happened this year during the Beijing Olympics, was the amazing achievement of the number one shuttler of the nation, Lee Chong Wei. One personal event that I would like to share with everyone is when Lee Chong Wei was against Lee Hyun Il of Korea in the semi-finals. I was one of the many people around standing at a Mamak stall whom supported our national hero. The greatest thing to see was when everyone in the Mamak stall was supporting with their hearts as they shouted everytime Lee Chong Wei scored a magnificent point. I, myself couldn't help but shout too. The moment Lee Chong Wei won the final point, at that instant, everyone in the Mamak stall got up and shouted their lungs out. You could see the Chinese, Indian, and Malays that were gathered together screaming as one. They were all hugging, congratulating, and supporting as one. Not as Malays, Indians or Chinese, but as Malaysians. I thought to myself, its funny how Malaysians come together as one to support a representative from the nation. Regardless the religion, we are still Malaysians after all. Although Lee Chong Wei got the silver in the end, he came back to Malaysia as a hero. Everyone was lifted and proud of his achievement.

In a nutshell, Malaysia is not a country based on only one religion, but it is a multi-racial country. We have to learn to live in a harmonious and tolerate life to ensure peace and success in the country. We Malaysians need each other for our country to develop socially and economically. One thing that we Malaysians should always remember during our accomplishment is that it’s not the achievements of an Indian, a Malay, or a Chinese, but instead it should be classified as the achievement of Malaysian.
